Narrator:       This is Science Today. About two decades ago, scientist Robert Cheng of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory discovered what's called low swirl combustion, an ultra-clean combustion method that can be used broadly for various heating and electric power generation systems. It is now commercially licensed to a company that specializes in industrial and commercial heaters and it's being used in applications ranging from textile production to industrial paint finishing — even baking.

Cheng:           In the absence of pollutants, for example, they sell the burner to commercial baking, so without any pollution, all the chicken meat comes out whiter and that's a desirable feature that they've been able to find a customer for the burner.

Narrator:       Cheng has also been collaborating with engineers at a solar turbine company to develop a low-swirl injector that allows for "fuel flexible" gas turbines, so an operator can choose among more environmentally sustainable fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions. For Science Today, I'm Larissa Branin.
